Trying to censor social media will be an almost impossible task that, if successful, will no doubt be the downfall of all social media.
A few years ago, someone tried to sue a Digg user for posting a download code to the site. Many other users copied and reposted the code in response, showing that social media could not be controlled. The event had a huge detrimental effect on the social bookmark site though because it was no longer “the users’ site” which they controlled but was instead controlled by outside influences.
If this happens to Twitter too, it would be a real shame. Twitter should be all about opening up conversations and encouraging openness and honesty. That’s the nature of the society we now live in so it should serve to make people more aware of their actions.
The news is full of stories of the legal case against Twitter by the footballer who was named through the platform. It will be interesting to see the result of this story.
